Sexism, homophobia and transphobia in Croatian media

This analysis provides a comprehensive insight into patterns of discriminatory reporting in the Croatian media landscape during 2023.

The focus of the analysis is a database of 4,463 media items, collected through ten months of systematic monitoring of local and national media. Particular emphasis is placed on identifying and understanding different forms of discrimination, including the sexual objectification of women, trivialization and stereotyping, as well as homophobia and transphobia.

Through a combination of quantitative and qualitative analysis, the document offers a detailed overview of how discrimination manifests in the media—not only through explicit hate speech, but also through everyday, normalized language and representations that contribute to the استمرار of gender and social inequality. It specifically examines the portrayal of women and LGBTIQ+ persons, as well as the role of media in shaping public attitudes and perceptions.

The findings indicate that discriminatory reporting is not sporadic, but systemic and recurring, grounded in recognizable editorial patterns—from clickbait-driven commercial logic to ideologically framed content. The document highlights the need for more responsible and gender-sensitive media practices, as well as for strengthening standards that protect human rights and the dignity of all social groups.
